Sturgeon Moon Ritual 2025 – A Time of Deepening Purpose

The Full Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius peaks on August 9th, (1:57 AM, MST) – 17 Aqu 00′. During the month of August, Native American tribes in the Great Lakes area would fish for sturgeon, which were quite abundant at this time of the year. These large fish would be dried and served as a key food source during the winter months. August’s Full Moon is commonly called the Sturgeon Moon, a name attributed to the Algonquin tribes of the Great Lakes region. This moon is also known by other names: Corn Moon, Red Moon, Green Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Grain Moon, Lightning Moon, and Dispute Moon. Additionally, the Ojibwe called the August full moon the Blueberry Moon, while the Dakota Sioux knew it as The Moon When All Things Ripen.

Due to the timing of the peak, you may wish to have a Friday night or early Saturday morning ritual. The Sturgeon Moon is the second full moon after the Summer Solstice and a moment where the fullness of summer begins to wane as we sense the subtle shifts toward autumn.

August is a time of immense natural energy. Plants are mature, fields are thick with growth, and the harvest season has begun for some crops. There’s a building anticipation in the air—the realization that the warmth and light of summer won’t last forever. In that awareness lies power: the opportunity to pause, assess what we’ve built, and begin aligning with what’s next. Aquarius, the water-bearer, brings clarity, innovation, and deep vision, making this a moon of reflection and redirection.

Full Sturgeon Moon Ritual Circle

<Using your Sage Wand, cleanse the space around the circle. As you do so, repeat this mantra>

I cleanse this space with smoke and air of all things that have no care.

<Now to cast the circle – remind participants to remain within the smudged area throughout the ritual>

“I cast this circle, firm and clear. A space where truth and trust draw near. Here, between the realms we stand. With open heart and steady hand.”

East
Turn with me to the East and together we shall call upon the Spirits of Air. As knowing winds fill our space with fresh ideas, clarity of thought, and enlightenment, we must allow insight to settle like morning mist and awaken our minds to what must be seen.

South
Now face South and invoke the Spirits of Fire. In our hearts, we must allow the flames of transformation to burn away any illusions in our lives. That which we must do in order to stoke the passions, boldly step forward, and shed the skin that no longer fits.

West
Turn to the West and honor the Spirits of Water. The waters are the keepers of wisdom and memory, flowing freely, engaging in a constant ebb and flow. We must master our emotions, so that they move like the water; forever changing yet always returning home.

North
Now we face North and ground ourselves with the Spirits of Earth. To be grounded is to be enjoined with stone and root, leaf and bone, soil and sand. Let what is real be revealed, what is worthy gain purchase, and what is not needed take flight into the unknown.

Invocation of the Full Sturgeon Moon

<Light the silver candle>

Moon of August, Moon of Thought, bearer of visions the seasons brought,
Illuminate the paths once hidden, reveal the truths we’ve long forbidden.
Sturgeon Moon, ancient and strong, Carry me through currents long.
Teach me wisdom from the deep, where shadows stir and secrets sleep.

Take a moment, look skyward, and connect with the moon. Visualize its light surrounding your body, filling your space with peaceful illumination. Absorb its healing energy and become one with the universe.

Sturgeon Moon – The Moon of Deepening Purpose

As the season matures and light begins to wane, this August full moon offers space for insight. Under this powerful lunar energy, we’re invited to look honestly at the structure of our lives, our choices, our relationships, and our intentions. And in that honest look, we must further evaluate all things which we interact with, both physically and spiritually. We must question alignments to validate if they are still of value. We must review our circles, both inner and larger ones to see if anyone has drifted in our out, and the reasons why. Our movements within the community and the world at large must be looked at with a wide-angle lens in order to see the dynamics taking place, with whom, when, and why.

Now is the time to understand that this deepening purpose that we are about to engage with, is a necessity, not just an exercise. For purpose is what guides our actions, fuels our intentions, and safeguards our energy. As the summer sun surrenders to the chill of autumn our focus will be with the harvests, and preparations for the winter. Spiritual planning will be put aside while we work the land and make the arrangements for the days beyond. This is why we must engage with ourselves now, while there is time to immerse in the reality of life.

<Light the black candle.>

This black candle is a symbol of endings. A beacon to help usher those things which no longer serve us, to the void. Focus on it as you search your thoughts for the stagnant, the outdated, the deceptive, and the null. Dig deep into areas which seem safe, for things can hide in plain sight. As you sort the wheat from the chaff, let clarity and innovation be your guide and common sense your benchmark.

Let this moonlight cast truth where once there was shadow.

<Now, write down what you are releasing—thoughts, habits, roles, or fears.>

Once you have made the decision to step away from the things that are not part of your future, approach the fire and burn the sheet saying, “I release the things which no longer serve me.”

With release comes clarity. It may take time for that feeling to settle in but be prepared for it. Think about the spaces you’ve created in your circles by eliminating things that are no longer of value. They will need filled with something positive and useful, or there’s a good chance old habits, negative energy, and lethargy will creep back in. Think about what it is you want to do and set a plan in motion to make it happen.

Gratitude

To the Moon who lights the path,
To the Waters that carry our truths,
To the Earth who holds us firm,
And to the Fire that forges our way
We offer our eternal gratitude

Closing Our Full Sturgeon Moon Ritual

North
Look to the North once again. Remember that the wisdom of the Earth and those who walked these lands before you will remain with you for as long as you choose. Plant roots, but do not forget that flexibility must be your stalwart companion.

West
Now turn to the West. All things are in motion, just as the tides lap the sands, and the water flows. Trust in the fact that movement is inevitable, but that change is a choice.

South
To the South we turn now. The flames have served our needs tonight, burning away those things which no longer serve us. Now that we’ve stirred the embers, felt the smoke, and tasted the heat, we can truly put a plan in motion.

East
And finally, East. Visions of greatness are yours to reach for. Inhale the old and breathe in the new. Make promises to yourself and keep them. Your purpose is deepening.

This sacred space now returns to time. Our work is done, our hearts aligned.
Though the circle opens, it shall remain, A bond of light, through joy and reign.

Now with lightness in your step and a twinkle in your eyes, go in peace. This circle is open but unbroken.
