Full Snow Moon Ritual 2026 – The Heart Beneath the Frost

The Full Snow Moon in Leo rises over the winter landscape on February 1st, 2026, reaching its peak at 3:09 PM MST, when the land still sleeps beneath snow and the promise of renewal stirs unseen beneath the frozen ground. This is a moon of brightness inside darkness; a flame within ice found only when the body remembers warmth even as breath lingers in cold air. February’s full moon is known as the Snow Moon, taking its name from the heavy snows that blanketed northern lands during this time. Other names include the Bear Moon, Little Famine Moon, Racoon Moon, Suckerfish Moon, Goose Moon, Bald Eagle Moon, and Groundhog Moon. Weather-bound names tell of endurance and sheltering together — the Storm Moon, Quickening Moon, Shoulder to Shoulder Around the Fire Moon, Snow-Blinding Moon, and Ice Moon.

This Snow Moon is unique, arriving in the heart of Imbolc, the season of quiet beginnings, when seeds dream underground, and life prepares to awaken though the world remains hushed and pale. The Snow Moon does not roar or threaten, it whispers, reminding us that purification, renewal, and release take root first in stillness. This moon teaches us to tend the inner fire, to cleanse what weighs us down, to strengthen protective spirit, and to listen for the faint but steady rhythm of life beneath the frost.

Under this moon, we honor the flame that survives the cold — the courage to begin again, the will to heal what has hardened within us, and the heart that continues to beat strong even when the world lies silent and white.

Calling the Quarters

East
We turn first to the East, where pale light of morning strains through the frozen winter sky, where breath becomes cloud and thought becomes intention. Here we honor the beginnings that form in silence, the first stirring beneath the frozen earth, the first spark of returning life. In the East, we learn to trust the unseen.

South
Now we look to the South, where the inner fire of life resides, where the memories of heat and warmth wait to sustain the body and spirit. Here we honor courage in the face of challenge, not as loud triumph, but as the steady burn that refuses to fade. In the South, we learn to tend our flame with care, devotion, and restraint.

West
Next, we turn to the West, where the falling snow reflects twilight and the waters of life sleep beneath thick layers of ice. Here we honor release and soft surrender, not to capitulate, but for the cleansing that follows grief, the healing that begins when heaviness is allowed to melt away. The West teaches us that purification is a journey inward.

North
At last, we turn to the North, keeper of stone, root, and the winter’s forever memory. We recall how our ancestors endured, not through force, but through reverence, planning, and skill. Here we honor strength that is patient, grounded, and sure. In the North, we learn how to hold fast while the world lies cold and still.

Our circle is cast; our minds and hearts are open to engage with the lunar energy of the full Snow Moon.

The Heart Beneath the Frost

Winter is often stereotyped as completely harsh, uncomfortable, and filled with hardship, when in fact it is so much more. As we learned from our look into the Twelve Days of Yule, our ancestors saw winter as a time of rest and recuperation, but also a time of listening. Beneath the snow, the land breathes softly, just enough to hear the subtle changes happening. Beneath the stillness of a blanket of white, life waits with quiet confidence. This is the time when dreams gather strength underground, when intention gathers warmth before rising into form.

The Full Snow Moon reminds us that purification does not erase, it reveals. It clears the fog of worry, the remnants of fear, the weight of what we have carried too long. It teaches that release is not abandonment, but respect. In order to move forward and continue to grow, we must give up those things and the energies that no longer serve our greatest and highest purpose.

Imbolc marks the threshold between dormancy and awakening. It is a time of tending rather than reaching, of preparing rather than rushing. The Full Snow Moon asks us to honor that moment when the heart remembers its fire, even while the world remains wrapped in winter. A full moon on Imbolc occurs about every 20 years, making it uncommon, but not so rare that it would be auspicious.

The Quiet Fire Within

<the ritual leader invites all to gather nearer to the fire or lantern light while they raise the protective charm or talisman overhead>

This talisman is a vessel of memory and intention. It is a keeper of promises, a guardian, and a guide to carry on the path ahead. Now held high under the light of the Full Snow Moon, it becomes a supercharged witness to our resilience, and our fortitude by absorbing the lunar energy which carries a warmth of our purpose and the strength of our will.

As free people, with choice in each thing we do, we choose to not harden our spirits against the world, despite the cruel nature the world can sometimes offer us. Instead, we clear our spirit, purify it, in preparation for what the future might hold. Protection is not armor, it is not a suit of energy in which negativity bounces away from, nor is it a full-time sentry which warns us from making bad decisions or taking unwise steps. Protection is alignment with our truest self. It is that inner voice, that second sense, and that pause before speaking. Protection is seeing with our third eye, even when we think it’s clouded. It is being grounded, focused, and pursuing those things which raise our vibration to its highest level.

<ritual leader should lift the bowl of melted snow or cool water>

This water carries the story of winter – storms, snow, ice, and wind. An open sky allowing frigid darkness to cover the land. A landscape covered with a layer of white. The great lesson transformation that water teaches us, appearing right before our eyes. But as snow melts, it brings about great change. So it is with the burdens we carry, especially those that we have allowed to remain frozen in place.

Take a moment and ponder that which rests within you. Those places that are cold and unmoving. The terrible things we cannot name, fearing that even thinking about them might resurrect their power over us. Negative habits that we did not challenge, and in many cases embraced as temporary distractions from something else. The doubts we allowed to linger, until they make us weak, helpless, and unable to step ahead. We are often our own wardens, and our past is like a prison cell. The Snow Moon calls upon us to thaw them out, to bring breath and awareness back into what has been held still for too long. Like ice, they will melt, and like water they can be transformed in liquid, which can flow far away, but, only if we choose to make it so.

<ritual leader passes the bowl among the group>

Dip your fingers into the icy water, touch the drops on your face, your skin. Feel the echo of winter’s chill for a moment. Then feel that chill soften, then fade, and finally release. Let this be the moment where what was once numbing now becomes awakening, where heaviness begins to thaw, hate begins to fade, negativity is banished, and nothing seems impossible. You are not brittle ice, rather a living flame beneath winter’s frost.

Spiritual Cleansing and Release

We stand between winter and awakening — between what has been endured and what is ready to emerge. The Snow Moon teaches us that we do not move forward carrying every burden from seasons past. We cleanse. We release. We honor what has shaped us — and allow it to melt away.

What no longer serves us becomes weight upon the spirit. Old fears, stagnant grief, lingering resentment, exhaustion of the heart — these are not our foundation. They are layers of frost that can be thawed.

Take hold of your breath. Feel the ground beneath you. Know that release is an act of courage, not abandonment.

Stand now, together, and repeat after me.

I release the heaviness I have carried through the cold.
I free myself from doubt, stagnation, and fear of change.
I honor what has passed, and I choose to begin again.
My spirit is cleansed, my purpose renewed, my heart alive beneath the snow.

Now let these burdens dissolve like ice beneath sunlight — drifting away into the quiet air, leaving only clarity, warmth, and space for new beginnings.

Closing the Circle — The Way of the Snow Moon

North
We turn again to the North, where bones, roots, and mountains endure the winter without haste. We honor the wisdom of stillness and the knowing that strength grows slowly, unseen, yet unwavering.

West
We turn now to the West, where water moves in silence and healing flows without spectacle. We honor reflection, rest, and the courage to release what no longer belongs to us.

South
We turn to the South, where the inner flame remains faithful, sustained by hope, community, and trust in the seasons to come. We honor the fire of the heart, not fierce, but steady.

East
We finally turn once more to the East, where dawn waits patiently beyond the horizon. We honor the promise of return, the breath of renewal, and the path that will soon unfold before us.

<ritual leader gently extinguishes the candle>

The Full Snow Moon does not demand urgency — it invites renewal. Beneath the frost, life gathers strength. Beneath the silence, the heart begins to burn bright again. Like the flame protected within winter walls, you carry resilience, courage, and awakening within you.

Carry this flame forward as the light slowly returns.

Closing Reflection

The Snow Moon teaches us that transformation begins quietly. The world may still appear cold and barren — yet beneath its surface, everything is preparing to rise. So too are we. The heart grows stronger in stillness. The spirit brightens beneath the weight of snow. And when the thaw finally comes, we meet it ready, purified, and alive.
